In his weekly post-Shabbat address to his followers, rabbi Ovadia Yosef, spiritual leader of Shas, yesterday spoke out against Avigdor Lieberman. Lieberman is the leader of the right-wing Israel Beiteinu party, and he’s expected to bring that party to new and unprecedented heights in the elections on Tusday. The last poll published before the election day, indicated that Israel Beiteinu would get as many as 19 seats in the next Knesset, and thus reducing Labor to the fourth largest party in parliament for the first time ever.
Perhaps in light of this forcast, rabbi Ovadia urged the people of Israel not to vote for Israel Beiteinu and warned that anyone who voted for Lieberman was in fact supporting the devil. Strong words, but maybe not completely surprising. Lieberman has been accused of racism and he has conducted a very aggressive anti-Arab election campaign.
But wait, that wasn’t what rabbi Ovadia lashed out against, was it?
No, what bothered the former Chief Rabbi was the prospect that Lieberman would promote civil marriages, shops that would sell pork and the drafting of yeshivah students.
