Organ for Anti-Semitism

A time-honored anti-Semitic lie is that Jews kidnap non-Jews and kill them to use their bodies for various — usually ritual — purposes. In Christian Europe of the Middle Ages, it was claimed that Jews used the blood of Christian children to bake matzah for Passover.

In a modern-day version, it’s claimed that Israel kills Palestinians and use them as involuntary organ donors for ill Jews in need of a kidney, liver or spleen. The Swedish journalist Donald Boström tried to push this story in a book already in 2003, and now he’s found another opportunity to recycle the accusation: the illegal organ trade scandal in the United States.

Yesterday, Boström published a long article connecting the events that have rocked the Jewish community in New Jersey with the rumors and unsubstantiated hearsay he was fed in the West Bank during the Second Intifada.

The culture section of Aftonbladet, the leading organ of the social democratic movement in Sweden, is Boström’s willing mouthpiece. His article can be read in full here.

Fortunately, the publication has already met some reactions, both in Sydsvenskan and in Svenska Dagbladet.

UPDATE: Also Haaretz writes about Boström’s claims in English here and in Hebrew here.

    Sanning i betraktarens ögon…

I’ve never claimed that one automatically becomes an anti-Semite by criticizing Israel. Anyone who reads this blog would know that that would make me an anti-Semite as well.

And of course one can be critical of Israel. In fact, as I’ve written on this blog before, not even all stupid and uninformed criticism of Israel stems from anti-Semitism — sometimes it’s just stupid and uninformed criticism.

Furthermore, there is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Boström is critical of Israel — judging by his collected publications on the topic I would think he hates our guts. And that’s probably why he’s willing to pass on anti-Semitic slander and dress this ridiculous accusation up as a legitimate theory.

That, I’m afraid, is the only connection to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict here: Boström is a strong supporter of the Palestinians, and he does whatever he thinks can boost their cause — even if it includes spreading racist crap.

I would also like to direct any Swedish-speaking readers to this Newsmill analysis by Niklas Ekdal. It’s the best comment I’ve come across so far:

Det känns inte som jag behöver tillägga så mycket. Du skriver det så bra själv. Antingen är kritiken mot Israel indirekt eller direkt antismemitisk eller så är den bara korkad och obefogad…Nåväl trots att du numera bor i landet så kunde man ju hoppats att du kunde uppehålla en mer objektiv bild.

Mattias, what a plump comment. You know all to well that this has little to do with with “critizism” or an “objectiv” stance. Is Boström right or wrong? Is this a blood libel or not?

I’m a Swede myself, I’m living in Sweden and I’ve reading Aftonbladet since at least the early 80’s. This newspaper is an outspoken enemy of the Jewish state and at the same time a friend of all sorts of totalitarian entities and movements. AB has published several op-eds and “commentaries” apologizing or even defending fiercely racist movements like Hamas (a movement that make references to the infamous anti-Semitic Protocols in their own charter). The publishing of Mr. Boströms piece should not be viewed as a single incident. Rather as part of a long and intensive campaign. Besides that Aftonbladet knows all to well that this sort of material has the ability to stir up not only “the Arab street” but also islamist terrorists. With other words, the editors of Aftonbladet are spewing their hateful rumors in a much more dangerous context than you and many other of my compatriots are aware of. Islamist terrorism has no borders nowadays. Just like anti-Semitism.

Well, I’ve read Aftonbladet since the 70’s actually. But the negative views of Israel (and the rallying for islamist terror and totalitarianism) have, according to my knowledge, grown even stronger after 9/11. Back in the 80’s AB was more inclined to publish old-fashioned Soviet styled “anti-Zionism” and “anti-imperialism”.

FYI Mattias: Here is the Charter of the Palestinian islamist movemet Hamas:
    http://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/hamas.asp

Check paragraph 22. And of course 32:

Their plan is embodied in the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying.

Apparently I wasn’t clear enough in my last comment, so let me try over:

    1) One can criticize Israel and Israeli policies without being an anti-Semite.

    2) Not even all criticism which is unjustified stems from anti-Semitism.

    3) DB obviously has it in for Israel. I see no other reason for him to pass on malicious racist gossip. And so, as far as balance goes, I wouldn’t look for it in DB’s articles, that’s for sure.

    Mattias,

This incident has little or nothing to do with “criticism” (which on the contrary is both welcomed and necessary in a democracy, will it be Sweden, the US or Israel). Mr. Boströms article – like many other articles in Aftonbladet – is still (8/25) based on RUMOURS. In this case rumors with some really ugly medieval connotations.

In a western nation criticism demands critical thinking. And critical thinking demands logic, proofs, deduction etc. The lack of these methods is perhaps comme il faut in Syria, Iran or North Korea. But not in Sweden. At least not according to my opinion.

Concerning Hamas I only mentioned that Aftonbladet is a supporter of that movement (check Helle Klein, Olle Svenning etc.). With other words, Aftonbladet is not an “ordinary” Swedish newspaper. Rather an openly pro-Islamist publication. A publication that demonstrably has no problems siding with fierce anti-Semites nazi style. You don’t seem to understand that distinction, do you?
