With Friends Like These

I know that I’m probably testing your patience with yet another blog post about Donald Boström’s article in Aftonbladet from August 17, but I can’t keep this from you.

Jan Helin, the editor-in-chief of Aftonbladet, debated Roland Poirier-Martinsson, the head of the Timbro media institute, and the debate can be viewed at Timbro’s homepage here.

It’s a very interesting debate (unfortunately in Swedish), but I’d like to highlight one thing: Mr. Helin says that his best friends in this whole affair were foreign minister Avigdor Liebermann and the Swedish ambassador to Israel who turned this into a debate on the freedom of speech, instead of one on journalistic ethics and professionalism.

I usually don’t agree with Mr. Helin very often, but on this particular account I couldn’t agree more.

I’m in no position to evaluate his character, but I was also surprised by the admission.
